Howard Rheingold put me onto MediAgora.
MediAgora is quite a refreshing read as it makes no assumptions about existing models - just looks at digital for what it is and looks at how a model may work.
Great to see it in the format of 'principles' too.
Principles and goals mediAgora defines a new market model, based on coherent principles and goals.
Principles:
Creators should be credited and rewarded for their work.
Works can be incorporated into new creative works.
When they are, all source works should be credited and rewarded.
Customers should pay a known price.
Successful promotion of work should be rewarded too.
Individuals can play multiple roles - Creator, Promoter, Customer
Prices and sales figures should be open
Relationships are based on trust and reputation
Copy protection destroys value
Goals:
Creators have 3 main goals - getting heard, getting credited and getting paid
Customers want to find works and pay a fair price
Creators set the price, customers decide to pay it (or not)
Promoters have an incentive to promote Works, but not to compete with other promoters for the same work
Working within the system is more attractive than subverting it
It connects with much of my thinking except for the "copy protection destroys value" part. I don't have a position on that one yet. I like the ideal of no copy protection as it would promote a creative world. Without barriers, people can fanatically make and consume creativity... DRM can be particularly frustrating when you are forbidden from moving or file, or have to license it every time you want to play it...
All that said - I am not sure of the short-term solution. Today we are committed to DRM as there is a gap between this ideal and the realities of how people use P2P. The tragic thing is that today, it seems, users expect everything to be free.
Also, DRM does not need to mean that the file is over-restricted.
Our challenge it to create the a new model where users relish in experiencing new creativity and those that make the stuff can earn a living, get famous, get feedback, etc... its a whole ecosystem so there are many threads to consider...
I was very interested in this from MediAgora:
"This is where Promoters come in. They are paid by the creators for sales. A promotional fee is fixed as part of the price charged for each work. If I buy the work from the original artist, they earn this fee. If I buy it through a promoter, he earns part of the fee. If I tell a friend to buy it, I receive a part, the promoter I bought it from also receives part of the fee and the original artist keeps the remainder. Whoever the customer hears about the work from, she pays the same fee."
I have been thinking alot about this. Any system we create needs to have the capacity for anybody to become a 'promoter' and for those promoters to have the tools to promote.
