There is a Web 2.0 trend towards opening up your internet application by creating a public API. Consider Flickr, Skype, Amazon, Google. This always makes me a loyal user of a product because people that exploit the API are always releasing cool, useful things to keep me interested. It is challenging from a business perspective because users can release services you may have charged for for free. You need to know your business model and know what you can release comfortably.
