There is a Web 2.0 trend towards opening up your internet application by creating a public API. Consider Flickr, Skype, Amazon, Google.  This always makes me a loyal user of a product because people that exploit the API are always releasing cool, useful things to keep me interested.  It is challenging from a business perspective because users can release services you may have charged for for free.  You need to know your business model and know what you can release comfortably.  Cory blogged some notes on a Flickr presentation at ETECH on this question.
